RCGP announces new president

Dr Richard Vautrey has been elected as the next president of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

He will take over the ceremonial role from Dame Clare Gerada in November when her two-year term finishes.

A graduate of Manchester University, Dr Vautrey completed his GP training in Rochdale and Manchester. He has been a GP partner in Leeds for nearly 30 years and has worked as a GP in urban and rural settings in Nigeria.

His previous leadership experience includes being the chair of the BMA GP committee in England, and he has 13 years of experience as a member of the RCGP Council.

Dr Vautrey said it was a privilege to have been elected adding: “I will do all I can to work to the best of my ability for you and our great profession.”

Azza Elghonaimy, Aneez Esmail, Chaand Nagpaul, Heather Ryan, Selvaseelan Selvarajah and Emma Wong were also elected as new council members.
