RCP president to step down following ‘challenging time’

The president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is to step down "following a challenging time for the college".

Dr Sarah Clarke has informed the RCP council that she will step aside from the role in September, after a transition period.

She is to meet with the board of trustees on Thursday (20 June).

The announcement comes after a group of senior officers asked Dr Clarke to resign the role to give the college a "fresh start".

The college has had a tumultuous year so far - facing heavy criticism from members for its handling of the debate about the future of physician associates (PAs).

Dr Clarke is only the fourth ever female president of the RCP. She was previously the clinical vice president of the RCP and past president of the British Cardiovascular Society.

She is an interventional cardiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge where she is also clinical director for strategic development.
